NEW BAKERY FOR ALBANY BAKERIES

CES Group was involved with the Project Management as well as Quantity Surveying Services for this Project. Construction of the bakery faced challenges from the start. During mass earthworks that involved the excavation of an area 120meters long x 30meters wide x 4meters deep, it was discovered that the site is subject to major water seepage. Designs with regards to groundwater drainage had to be revisited to ensure that flooding of the building was averted.

Little did we know that the presence of groundwater was only a forewarning, and that we will experience above average rainfall that will influence our tight construction schedule. Rescheduling had to take place to include working during weekends and a week after the builders break in December 2009.

The building was delivered to the client for installation of their plant within acceptable time frames. This is a result of the dedication of all involved.

Interesting facts and figures:

The total size of the building is approximately 6000 square meters with an actual bakery area of approximately 3500 square meters. The bakery is located on a first floor suspended slab. Practical completion was reached in 7 ½ months, and installation of plant commenced in February 2010.

Once commissioned and in full production the plant will produce 8000 breads per hour running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This will result in 1.3 million breads a week that will leave the premises to be distributed in Pietermaritzburg and surrounds.

MECHANISED XLP MINING

With the signing of the latest mechanised contracts, CES entered the second generation of stepped rate performance contracts, unique to working cost operations in the narrow reef mining environment.

Our expertise associated with the technical, financial and contractual aspects of the XLP application, will continue to serve the mining industry.

Mechanised Alternatives

The development of conventional ore transfer passes, poses some of the highest safety risks in modern mining. CES provided financial modelling on a mechanised alternative, known as the Box Hole Borer, developed by Sandvik and one with major platinum producers in South Africa.

The emphasis on less arduous ore extraction techniques, within a safer working environment, will remain high on the agenda's of all parties, related to the mining industry.

NEW WINDER BUILDING FOR BURNSTONE MINE

CES Group were appointed by DRATS Technical Services for the quantity surveying services for the civil and mechanical which included the enquiry documentation, financial reporting and final account negotiations.

PICM Randfontein was appointed as the main civil contractor for the construction of the proposed new winder house located near Balfour, Mpumalanga. The works included mass earthworks, civil works and structural steelwork. The design included for suspended floors which reduced the construction period by almost 2 months.

Construction of the winder house faced challenges right from the start due to the high rainfall in the area during the 2009/2010 rain season. The contractor experienced constant delays and stoppages due to groundwater and flooding. Despite this the construction were only delayed by two months.

During construction CES Group managed the payments and financial reporting and the final account value came within less than 1% of the original contract price which, taken into account the complexity of the project and delays experienced, is excellent.
